About Slovenia

Halfwa Halfway between London and Istanbul; a two hour drive from Venice; or a short trip from the metropolises of Vienna and Prague – geographically, historically, and culturally, Slovenia has always had a European flavour. In a relatively small area you can find the best of a whole continent: mountains and lakes, the Mediterranean Sea and vast forests, ancient castles, and urban rhythms. Slovenia is often described as a country at a crossroads. Through the centuries, it has developed under influences from all directions that have left their traces. The result is a stunning variety of professions, lifestyles, and culture.

About Ljubljana

Ljubljana is the political and cultural heart of the Slovenian nation. It is an important European commercial, business, exhibition and congressional centre as well as the transport, science and education centre of Slovenia.

As its inhabitants and numerous visitors will tell you, Ljubljana is, indeed, a people-friendly city. Categorised as a medium-sized European city, it offers everything a metropolis does yet preserves its small-town friendliness.

Its geographical position in the centre of Europe has determined Ljubljana as a natural meeting place for merchants and soldiers as well as - and more than once - peacemakers. The victors of the Napoleonic wars selected this peaceful city as the site of the Holy Alliance congress, which in 1821 sealed the European political geography for years to come.

The city's increasingly vibrant commercial and trading life in the rapid increase in foreign diplomatic representatives are giving it an ever greater cosmopolitan touch. It offers a wide variety of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants. Relief from the hustle and bustle of life in the capital can be found in the numerous parks and woodland areas, which in some places reach nearly into the city centre. But above all, Ljubljana is a city of youth, fun and contemplation, the latter usually taking place in one of the numerous cafés in the old town.
